Every solution developed within the Azalea project attends to a three-way balance between the social, ecological and economic aspects. To satisfy the needs of today, while guaranteeing the needs of tomorrow is an idea that must be considered in every aspect of the society.
The solution to a problem using existing technology, materials and techniques but combining them into a brand-new blend is our definition of innovation.
The house is based on the Valencian Barraca, an autochthonous dwelling from the east coast of Spain that is built with natural and local materials, it is a typical farmers’ house.
We improve construction efficiency by analyzing the ecological foot print we generate since the manufacture of the construction materials until its destruction.

The cleanest energy is the one that is not produced, that is why we base our energetic model in a nearly zero energy demand.
After passing through a biological purifying system, graywater and rainwater are used to irrigate the vegetable garden, clean the house and supply the toilets.
Vegetable gardens with autochthonous plants that are adapted to local weather are cultivated without chemicals, taking full advantage of the available surface area.
Cooperation and mutual complementation between flora and fauna to achieve a more sustainable farming.

The project is based on prefabricated architecture. The joints have been conceived to preserve mechanical performance and guarantee insulation continuity, tightness and staunchness.
The dwelling is completely self-sufficient, from solar panels’ energy production to vegetable gardens that provide seasonal produce.
The protagonists of the project are wood, one of the most versatile products in history, and natural insulation. Additionally, we have prioritized the use of autochthonous materials from Valencia, such as ceramics and tiles.
The structure is made with laminated wood beams and columns with metallic fittings, which create a light structure that can be dry built and is ready to be assembled and disassembled. The wood comes from sustainably managed forests which have a life cycle that is respectful to the environment, as it can be reutilized and recycled until it becomes biomass.
